Description

Lady Dodd's Cottages is a block of four almshouses, originally eight, built in 1746 as indicated by a plaque. They were founded by Lady Isabella Dodd to provide for the maintenance of four elderly men and four elderly women. The cottages are constructed of vitreous-brown brick with red brick dressings and vertical strips, featuring a rendered plinth and eaves adorned with narrow brick dentils. The hipped roof is covered with old tiles and has three gables on the north side, while the central bay on the south side is covered with slates. There are three brick chimneys. The building is one storey high and measures approximately three by two bays. The windows are irregular 20th-century leaded casements, and there is a 20th-century door located at the center of the north side. The south side has a taller central bay with a shallow gable that contains a round inscription plaque. This bay also features paired casements with segmental heads flanking a central flush-panelled door, which is sheltered by a 19th-century gabled timber porch. The interior has been modernized in the 20th century.
