Description

Nos 4 and 5, Market Square, originally dating from the 16th century, now comprise a tall block largely of the 17th and 18th centuries. The building is three storeys high, with a rough cast exterior, a bold cornice supported by plain brackets, and a hipped roof covered in old tiles. It presents a five-bay front, with some alterations to the glazing. Small pediments are positioned over the second-floor windows. Modern shops occupy the ground floor. The building possesses associations with literary figures, having served as a meeting place for the Omar Khayyam Club. Nos 4 and 5 form an important group at the north-west end of High Street.
