Description
No 1 on High Street is a late 18th-century building, with some alterations possibly from the early 19th century. It is two storeys tall, featuring a brick upper section and a painted stucco ground floor. The building has a painted stucco frieze and cornice, along with a panelled brick parapet that has moulded coping and a blocking course. The roof is covered with old tiles.
The front of the building has five bays, with the outer bays projecting. The glazing bars are intact. On the ground floor, there are pairs of pilasters on the outer bays, which are placed over lower secondary pilasters that frame the windows. To the left, there is a modern five-panel door with a rectangular fanlight above it, all situated under the frieze, cornice, and blocking course.
No 1, along with Nos 5, 6, 6A, 6B, 7A, and 7 Market Square, forms a group of buildings of architectural significance.
