Description
65 Well Street is a shop and dwelling that likely dates from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has a rendered exterior over a timber frame, topped with a plain-tile roof from the 20th century and features a large front lateral stack that is capped at the eaves level. It has an L-plan layout and is two stories high with a three-window range. The central area has a 20th-century shop front with a deeply recessed door, and to the right, there is a 19th-century shop window that has been altered in the 20th century and features a moulded cornice. To the left of the shop front is the large front lateral stack, and there is a 19th-century four-pane window located in a blank recess on the far left, which extends into the first floor. The first floor jetties to the right of the stack and has a two-light and a three-light casement window on the far right. At the rear right, there is a two-storey wing. Inside, the structure is not visible in the shop area, but the stack is thought to be associated with a late medieval stone fireplace on the ground floor that has an ornamental frieze. It is believed that the original roof still exists. The building is noted to have lost at least one bay to the left due to the creation of Bridge Street in the early 19th century.
