Description

Medmenham Gates, located on the south side of Henley Road in Medmenham, is a house dating from the 16th century, with the northwest end refronted and extended in the early to mid-18th century. The northwest chimney was rebuilt around 1900. The 18th-century section is constructed of knapped and coursed flint, featuring brick quoins and vertical strips that flank the windows. The rear wing is timber-framed with brick infill and is partially tile-hung. The building has an old tiled roof that is hipped over the front block, and it includes brick chimneys, with the left chimney having a lower section made of knapped flint and stone chequers from around 1900.

The house is L-shaped, with two storeys and an attic. The front façade has a three-bay arrangement with leaded cross windows, some of which were renewed in 1985, while the ground floor windows have cambered heads. There is a 19th-century matching window inserted to the left. The original outer bays feature doors, with the left door being three-panelled and having a rectangular fanlight above, while the right door is flush-panelled and has a 20th-century gabled wooden porch. There are two hipped dormers with paired leaded casements.

The chimney on the left has a moulded stone string with an arch over a plaque bearing the initials HEK, which stands for Hudson Ewbanke Kearley of Wittington. This chimney also has a stepped left side that leads to the stone scroll gate piers at the left end of the house. A pair of cast iron gates, also featuring the initials HEK, is matched by a corresponding pier to the left. The rear wing has leaded casements and notable timbering, including heavy wall-braces, arched wind-braces, and stop-chamfered joists.
