Description
Swanbourne House School is a school that was originally a mansion with an attached service wing, dated 1865 according to the rainwater heads. It was designed by William Burn for the Fremantle family. The building is constructed of white brick with stone dressings, featuring slate roofs and white brick chimneys topped with moulded stone caps. It is designed in a classical style, characterized by quoins, a moulded plinth with stone panels below the ground floor windows, a second floor sill course, a moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet.
The north front has three storeys and consists of five bays, with the outer bays slightly projecting. The sash windows on the ground floor do not have glazing bars and are set within architrave surrounds, featuring plain friezes and moulded cornices above. The upper windows have shouldered architraves. The centre of the building features a projecting single-storey porch with a balustraded parapet, similar sash windows on either side, and double panelled doors in an architrave surround, flanked by Doric columns and an entablature.
On the right side, there are three bays with canted bay windows on the ground floor of the outer bays. The rear of the building has seven bays, with the outer pair of bays on each side slightly projecting and ground floor windows set back in segmental relieving arches. The service block to the east has a plain parapet, cornice, first floor band course, plinth, and plain window surrounds. This block is two storeys high with nine bays, four of which project. The two left bays have barred windows on the ground floor, while the remaining bays have sashes. A four-panelled door in the right-hand bay is sheltered by a porch with a pair of arches on Doric piers.
