Description
The Royal Oak is a public house located on Chalkpit Lane in Great Marlow. The building has an L-plan layout, with a rear wing that likely dates from the 17th century and early 18th century, incorporating older timbers, and a front wing from the 19th century. The front wing features whitewashed brick, offset eaves, a plain tile roof, and brick chimneys. It is one storey high with an attic and consists of three bays. The windows are 20th-century three-light barred wooden casements, with lower windows having segmental heads, and two upper windows located in gabled eaves-line dormers. There are half-glazed doors between the bays, with the right bay featuring a 20th-century gabled porch.
The rear wing is timber framed with whitewashed brick infill, a 20th-century tile roof, and brick chimneys. The 17th-century section near the bay is two storeys high and has barred wooden casements, with a four-light window on the ground floor and a three-light window above. The two far bays are single storey and have paired casements. These bays utilize substantial re-used timbers, some of which include curved wind-braces, and one truss features concave raking struts.
