Description

This is a group of three houses at 56, 58, and 60 High Street, Amersham. They date to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. The houses are timber-framed and have plaster walls covered with whitewash, an old tile roof, and a large red brick chimney stack from the early 17th century with four octagonal moulded shafts. There are four gabled dormers in the roof and a coved cornice. The houses are two storeys high with an attic. A flint rubble plinth sits at the base of the building. A carriageway is located on the left-hand side, leading to “The Worthys” at the rear. There are three doors and three three-light diamond-leaded casement windows on the ground floor. The first floor also has three similar windows, and a shallower three-light casement above the carriage arch, which serves a room that is actually part of the adjacent property at number 54. Inside number 56, there are wall paintings from around 1600 in the front ground floor room, depicting the Nine Worthies.
