Description
The Chalfont St Peter War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by W Acworth of Gerrards Cross in 1919, built by Brown & Sons, and unveiled in 1920. Flanking walls were added after the Second World War, with repairs made in the late 20th century and early 21st century.
The memorial is made of ashlar stone, with polished granite plaques added at an unknown date to the top tier of the base. It features a three-tiered octagonal base topped by a square plinth with decorative stops at the corners. Above this is a tall chamfered shaft with a rounded carved capital. The memorial is crowned by a stone lantern that has a niche on each of its four sides, covered by a decorative canopy with pinnacles and a central finial. The niches contain figures that depict, moving clockwise from the north, St Peter, Christ at the crucifixion attended by Mary, Christ with his arms outstretched, and the Madonna and Child. The names of 77 Fallen soldiers are carved in relief on each side of the plinth. The top tier of the stone base is faced with polished granite plaques that bear the dedication, which reads anti-clockwise around the memorial: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE/ OF THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914-1918/ ALSO TO THOSE WHO DIED/ 1939-1945/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR."
On the south side of the memorial, there are two low stone walls set at angles, with the inner faces containing the carved names of 41 casualties from the Second World War. A small network of paved paths radiates from the south side of the memorial base and flanks the stone walls.
