Description

The Cottage is a cottage built around 1770, with some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of flint with red brick pilasters and features a tiled roof with a catslide at the rear. There is an external flint and brick stack on the right side and a brick chimney on the rear slope. The building has two storeys and three windows. The first-floor windows are metal casements with leaded lights in their original openings, while the ground-floor windows have been enlarged to 20th-century casement windows with shutters.

The central entrance features a doorcase with a 19th-century gabled trelliswork porch and a half-glazed door that has a reeded surround and fleur de lys detailing. The right side elevation includes two original metal casements with pintle hinges, while the left side has a half-glazed door with a reeded surround, fleur de lys, and a pedimented surround. The rear elevation has metal casements, a gabled flint and brick one-storey service room, a stock brick 19th-century closet, and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension that is part of the original building.

Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters at the rear and a front room that features an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and a spine beam. The Cottage was originally built as a residence for the curate of the Parish Church of St Mary. In the early 1800s, it served as the original Police Station for Chesham, complete with a lock-up at the rear for detaining prisoners.
