Description
Bell Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions in the 19th century. It is timber framed with a brick rear bay and a brick front, topped by an old tile roof. It was likely originally a crosswing of an earlier house (now incorporated into No. 18 Church End), and is situated at a right angle to the green. The house has two storeys and three bays. The two western bays date back to the 16th century, while the eastern bay is a 19th-century addition. The front is gabled, with a door on the left side and four-pane sash windows, one on each storey, each set beneath a cambered arched head. The brickwork is painted. Inside, a 16th-century staircase is located to the north of the central bay, and the windows on the upper floor have oak frames with a diagonally set central bar. The ground-floor ceiling features massive joists, and there is an inglenook fireplace of a single-aspect type. Upstairs, the purlin braces are curved.
