Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk dating from the 20th century. Constructed of cast iron and glass, it is painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are present on the top panels, rather than being perforated. The kiosk features rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. It is currently in use as a functioning telephone kiosk, incorporating modernised internal equipment.
The kiosk is situated in the centre of the village, within the village conservation area, on Churchway’s southern end. It is located 10 metres south of the Grade II listed No. 6 Churchway, adjacent to the Grade II listed Green Dragon Public House at No. 8. Approximately 60 metres to the north lies the Grade II listed building, No. 2 (Dragon Tail), which is in direct line of sight with the kiosk.
The K6 telephone kiosk represents a significant milestone in 20th-century industrial design; designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It evolved from his earlier K2 design of 1924, displaying a more streamlined aesthetic, compact dimensions, and improved cost-effectiveness for mass production. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, with many being replaced in the 1960s, yet they remain iconic features of Britain's streetscapes.
The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its group value, attributed to its prominent visual association with three listed buildings.
