Description
The gatehouse range to Amersham Hospital, designed by architect George Gilbert Scott in 1838, is built in the Tudor style using squared knapped flint with red brick dressings and ornamentation. The building features a slate roof and brick stacks, some of which are missing, with diagonal shafts. It has cogged brick eaves, brick gable parapets, and shaped kneelers. The structure consists of one storey and an attic, with a two-storey central gabled block that includes a Tudor carriage arch, which is now blocked. The initials "AV" and a stepped string course are located above the arch.
On the first floor, there is a moulded brick cross mullion window dated 1838, with a string course that steps up to form a hood-mould. Attic lights with a diamond motif are positioned on each side. Flanking the central block are octagonal piers that end in pinnacles with ogee finials, and a smaller pinnacle above the gable. Each side of the building has two bays of cross mullioned windows, with an arched door located in the left-hand bay. The projecting gabled wings feature four-light cross mullion windows with hoods, all adorned with a moulded brick zig-zag pattern above, and attic lights with a diamond motif. The end bays have one window each, with a door in the left-hand bay and brick diaper patterns on each side. The gable ends include a four-light moulded brick cross mullion window on the left and a chimney stack with diaper patterns on the right. Shaped half gables mask the rear projection.
