Description

This is a 17th-century barn located in the northeast part of the stable court to the northeast of Chilton House, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The barn is constructed of rubblestone and features old tile roofs. It has five narrow bays, a central cart entry, and a south wagon porch with a painted weatherboard gable. To the left, there is a projecting weather-board gabled stone building with a tiled roof, which is now used as a garage. Adjacent to the main barn is a cross wing with two bays and a porch that has a thin brick gable above a band course, along with some diaper work. The central cart door has a segmental arch and is flanked by single light stone-framed windows. The north or rear elevation includes a central cart door with single "arrow-slits" on either side. The cross wing features a timber-framed north gable with thin brick infill. Inside, the barn has a double purlin roof supported by tie-beam and collar trusses, with collar struts attached to the underside of the principal rafters.
