Description

31 and 33 West Street are shops and dwellings dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century and the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a 20th-century plain-tile roof that is hipped to the left, with a brick end stack to the right. The structure is L-shaped, comprising two storeys and an attic, and has a four-window range. It is located at the corner of West Street and Castle Street.

The main elevation facing West Street has 20th-century doors on either side of the centre; the right door includes an overlight and a sash window, both covered by straight hoods on curved brackets. To the right, there is a canted bay window featuring a tripartite arrangement with a central round arch-headed sash window that has intersecting glazing bars at the top, flanked by pointed-arched lights and topped with a dentilled cornice. To the left, there are a pair of canted bay shop windows. A 20th-century door is set diagonally under the corner on the far left. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads. The building also has a plinth, partly made of limestone rubble, a storey band, and boxed wood eaves, along with four hipped roof dormer windows. The two-bay elevation facing Castle Street features 12-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors.
