Description
The K1 test stand, control room, and ancillary building are part of the former Royal Ordnance Establishment at Westcott. The K1 test stand is situated within the northern test area, near the western end of the former south-west to north-east runway, and approximately 45m south of the K2 test stand.
K1 is a vertical test stand, comprising a massive reinforced concrete tower which is chamfered towards the top and has a broadly rectangular plan. The designation 'K1' is painted in white on a black background on the north-west elevation. A metal platform projects from the flat roof to the north-east, accessible via an external metal staircase on the south-east elevation. There are several entrances, including a pedestrian entrance with a protective concrete porch to the north, and a low motor entrance with a solid metal door to the south-west. The motor entrance is also protected by a concrete porch-like projection, featuring two pairs of rails set into the ground for the movement of the rocket motor into the testing chamber. Internally, the structure resembles a large chimney, sealed at the roof by metal plates. The internal firing bay is reinforced with armour plating and includes platforms for accessing the motor. Chains and pulleys are suspended from a gantry on the ceiling to facilitate the movement of the rocket motor.
The control room, located to the west of the test stands, is a single-storey, L-shaped, flat-roofed brick building that is now used as an office. The test stands were originally connected to the control room by raised cable conduits, which have since been demolished.
An ancillary building, situated between the control room and the K2 test stand, is a two-part brick building, single-storey and with one half being lower than the other. Both sections have large double doors in the south elevation. A rocket-shaped weather vane is on the roof. The original function of this building is unknown, but it is likely that it served as an equipment store or workshop for the calibration of instruments, or potentially both.
The control room and the ancillary building are included for group value and have not been inspected internally.
