Description
The E test stand, control room, and associated structures form part of the former Royal Ordnance Establishment at Westcott. The test stand is situated in an isolated area within the northern test zone.
The test stand itself is a large shed, oriented north-west to south-east. It is constructed of reinforced concrete and steel, with a hipped roof made of corrugated plastic sheeting. This roof sits above a chain mail torpedo net supported by a grid frame of steel trusses and cables. The north-west elevation, which serves as the main entrance, features corrugated sheeting on the gable and large metal double doors, with a pedestrian entrance cut into them. These doors are flanked by concrete blast walls. An attached metal frame, serving as a loading gantry to facilitate the movement of rocket motors for testing, is located on the north-west side. A raised cable conduit connects the gantry to the test stand and the control room. Smaller extensions are present on the south-west and north-east sides of the stand. Inside the stand is a single, open space containing a metal framework with ladders and gantries, designed for accessing and lifting the motor. A 1961 photograph indicates that the loading gantry and a lean-to on the south-west side were original features. The chain mail roof was also original but was later covered with corrugated sheeting. A later addition is the lean-to on the south side, and the enclosure of the north-west elevation which originally had an open end. A concrete flume ramp is located on the north-west side.
The control room is a rectangular concrete building with a flat roof, located to the north of the test stand. The north elevation contains two paired pedestrian entrances, reached by concrete steps, and featuring solid metal doors. Internally, the space is divided into an office and a control room by brick dividing walls. The control room retains its original control panel. The join between the walls and ceiling is chamfered in concrete for reinforcement. A 1956 layout plan shows that the control room was originally located to the west and a subsequent eastern room housed electronics. A small, rectangular brick building (numbered 59), with a flat roof and located to the south-east of the test stand, is also present. This building was marked on the 1956 layout plan as a pump house.
Further features include a substantial angled concrete blast wall to the east of the site, constructed in sections, and a plunge bath, intended for operators to wash off any accidental spillage of liquid propellant.
