Description
Chiltern Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th to early 19th centuries and the 20th century. The right side features some timber framing with brick infill on the ground floor and whitewashed roughcast on the upper storey. The front gable was rebuilt in early 19th century red and vitreous chequer brick, with the upper part tile-hung. The far bay is made of flint with brick dressings, likely added in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The house has a thatched roof, which is half-hipped at the front, and brick chimneys. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The right side has a blank bay on the left, with old 3 and 4-light leaded windows in the remaining bays. There is a half-glazed door between the left bays. A staircase projection made of flint and brick with a tiled roof, dating from around 1920-1930, is located between the right bays. There is also a weatherboard lean-to on the right. The front gable features 20th century 3-light leaded casements. The rear includes a small lean-to made of whitewashed weatherboard and a 20th century two-storey wing that incorporates re-used timbers. The building is included for its group value.
