Description
31 and 31A High Street is a house that has been converted into flats and offices. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with flared headers and features a plain-tile roof with brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a basement, presenting a two-window range.
The central entrance has a 20th-century door with a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a segmental arched, gauged brick head. To the far left, there is a 9-panel, part-glazed door with a blank fanlight and a round-arched head. The ground and first floors have 16-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads, while the second floor features 12-pane sashes. The basement has three-light windows with central opening casements and flat-arched heads. The sunk basement is enclosed by cast-iron railings, and the building has moulded brick eaves.
Inside, the former dining room includes a sideboard niche on the back wall, flanked by cupboards. The niche has an elliptical-arched head and a moulded wood surround with decorative paterae at the imposts. The kitchen was previously located in the basement.
