Description
The School Chapel at Stowe School is a basilican chapel built between 1927 and 1929 by Sir Robert Lorimer. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a large Corinthian pedimented portico with steps at the south end. The flank walls have projecting bays at each end, adorned with Corinthian pilasters and carved spandrels above round-headed windows, with five windows in between and a balustraded parapet above.
Inside, there are seven arches on each side supported by fluted Ionic columns, which were taken from the Temple of Concord and Winged Victory. The sanctuary and the area under the ritual west gallery are decorated with carved and gilded early 18th-century cedar panelling, which was brought from the former chapel in the Mansion, along with the pulpit, lectern, and altar rails.
