Description

Middle Lodges, Southern Lodge is the southern lodge of a pair of estate lodges, built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a pitched roof that was originally slated but is now covered with corrugated iron. The building has projecting bracketed eaves, with those at the gable ends designed to resemble broken pediments.

The lodge is two storeys high and has two windows. The entrance has a flat arch and a plain plank door. To the right of the entrance is a segmental arch leading to a fictive painted sash window. On the first floor, there is a similar but smaller fictive sash window above the door and a blocked window to the right. The western facade, facing the road, includes a central round-arched shallow recess with a round-arched window that features a fictive painted radial pattern head, although the lower portion is boarded up. Above this is a sash window with a segmental arch. The eastern facade has a central round-arched niche and a painted fictive sash window above it.

Inside, the lodge retains original timbers on the first floor and in the roof, as well as a staircase leading to the upper floor. The property is also adorned with attached cast iron railings that have spearhead finials, along with open work box gatepiers and standards. The southernmost standard is topped with a pineapple finial on a scrolled spigot and features a coat of arms on the rear.
