Description
The entrance arch and gates adjoining Park Lodge serve as the gateway to Hartwell House. This structure dates from the early 18th century and was possibly relocated to its current site in the later 18th century. It features a classical arch made of ashlar stone, with piers and rubble stone flanking walls. The arch is rusticated and has a semicircular shape, complete with a plinth, imposts, and a keyblock that is carved with a crest. The cornice and blocking course are topped with a banded ball finial, and the flanking rusticated piers also have similar finials. The entrance is adorned with elaborate wrought iron gates, which provide access to the arch and side openings. The flanking quadrant walls end in square stone piers that have plain copings. The design of the arch resembles one depicted in a Nebot painting that is currently housed in the County Museum, Aylesbury.
