Description
The Grendon Underwood War Memorial is a stone structure located in a grassed area. It features a York stone obelisk that stands 2.3 meters tall, set on a square base and pedestal with scotia moulding. The northern face of the obelisk displays a wreath in high relief, with an inscription that reads: ‘ERECTED/ TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF/ THE MEN OF/ GRENDON UNDERWOOD/ WHO SERVED THEIR/ KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918./ IN MEMORIUM.’ Below this are the names of three fallen servicemen, including their rank and regiment or ship, along with the inscription ‘LEST WE FORGET.’ The eastern face lists those who were wounded or taken prisoner, while the western face honors those who also served. The southern face commemorates those from the parish who served in the Second World War, with the inscription: ‘ALSO/ IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ ALL FROM THIS/ PARISH/ WHO SERVED/ IN THE/ SECOND WORLD/ WAR/ 1939 – 1945,’ followed by their names.
The memorial is enclosed by iron chains that connect four timber posts. An adjoining memorial bench is present but is not considered of special interest.
