Description
Nos. 38, 40, and 42 on High Street are offices and a shop that were formerly one house, dating from the mid to late 18th century. The building is constructed of vitreous header brick with red brick quoins, window surrounds, and a moulded eaves cornice. It features a chamfered brick plinth, and the right gable is partially tile-hung. The roof is covered with tiles from the 20th century and has flanking brick chimneys. The building is two storeys high with an attic and consists of five bays. The windows are 3-pane sashes with gauged heads, with the ground floor windows being taller than those on the upper floor. All the sashes were renewed in the 20th century. There are two gabled dormers that have paired barred wooden casements. The central entrance features early 19th-century double doors with a rectangular fanlight, and each door has one long panel. The doorcase includes panelled reveals, flanking attached columns with elaborated Doric capitals, and an open moulded pediment.
