Description
The Mausoleum, built between 1763 and 1764, was designed by John Bastard the Younger of Blandford. It features a tall, hexagonal structure made of flint rubble with ashlar dressing, topped with an entablature and a panelled parapet that is adorned with stone urns grouped in threes at the corners. The exterior includes attached stucco Roman Doric columns beneath the entablature, which is decorated with triglyphs, guttae, and urn reliefs on the frieze, along with a modillioned cornice.
Inside, the unroofed space contains wall monuments, including one with figure sculpture from the early 18th century, and a central monument from 1769 featuring an urn on a pedestal beneath a Roman Ionic stone canopy. The walls have arches, bricks, and rectangular openings, along with inscriptions dedicated to Sir Francis Dashwood, Lord Le Despencer, and his friends.
The Mausoleum and the Church of Saint Lawrence together form a significant group.
