Description
St. Mary's House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a house that dates back to the 15th century. It originally features a hall with three bays and a solar of one bay to the south. The structure was altered and extended by two bays to the north in the 16th and 19th centuries. The hall and solar are timber framed, with tile-hanging and a brick plinth on the three southern bays, while the remainder is constructed of chequer brick, with the northern gable wall made of rubble stone. The roof is tiled and hipped over five bays to the south, enclosing a gabled cross wing of the solar.
The house has a central chimney stack with three attached shafts made of thin brick, along with additional stacks on the east gable of the solar and the north gable of the extension. It is two storeys tall, featuring irregular 19th-century wooden casements on the east and west sides. The south front includes a three-light leaded casement on the ground floor and two four-pane sashes on the first floor. The east front has a timber-framed gabled porch on the third bay, complete with moulded bargeboards, a door frame, and wooden benches inside. The entrance features a 12-panelled studded door with original hinges and handles, set in a moulded inner frame. The west front has a 19th-century projection on the left.
Inside, the hall and the first floor of the solar were originally open to the roof and feature arched wind braces. The hall contains two smoke-blackened trusses with collars on chamfered arched braces, as well as one queen strut truss. The solar also has braced collars. A first floor and chimney were inserted in the 16th century. The hall features a late 16th-century staircase with moulded balusters, square newel posts, and pointed finials, which may have been relocated. There is also a large open fireplace and altered dado panelling.
