Description

The Old House is a house dating from the 17th century, with a deed indicating it may have been built in 1605, and possibly incorporates earlier materials at the northern end. The house is timber-framed but was refronted and encased in brick in the early 18th century. The front features chequered brick with red brick dressings and has an old tile roof with a large chimney to the right of center, which has six octagonal shafts. A bracketed wooden cornice runs along the top.

The building is two stories high with a seven-bay front. On the right-hand side, there is a carriage arch with a two-light casement window above it. The other windows are early 18th-century sashes with thick glazing bars and segmental arched heads. A six-panel door, with the top panels glazed, is located in the third bay from the right and is framed with an architrave, bold cut brackets, and a flat hood. The right flank wall under the carriageway exposes the timber frame. The rear wall is constructed of flint and brick and features two three-light casements on the first floor with leaded glazing.

Inside, the heavy timbers of the central truss in the northern crosswing include jowled posts, a cambered tiebeam, and queenposts in the attic. There are chamfered 17th-century spine beams, several 17th-century panelled doors, and a decorated cupboard door in the first-floor northern room. The ground floor south room contains an 18th-century brick fireplace arch, while the central ground floor room features a decorated corner cupboard from the 18th century.
