Description

Hacker Gill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with expansions in the 18th century and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of roughly coursed sandstone rubble, mostly painted white, and features a stone slate roof. The building has a single-depth, three-unit plan oriented east-west, facing south, with the western unit probably being an early addition. There is an integral outbuilding at the east end and an outshut at the rear.

The exterior has two storeys and features one and two widely separated windows. The central two-window section has a former doorway, which has been altered to a window, slightly offset to the right of centre, and a former window to the right that has been converted into a doorway. There is an oblong eight-pane sash window to the left at ground floor and square six-pane sashes above the outer openings at first floor, with the right one set slightly higher than the left. The left one-unit portion has a doorway at the junction, a window to the left with altered glazing, and a six-pane sash above. There is a gable chimney to the left and a ridge chimney at the junction, with a store at the right end.

The rear of the farmhouse features random through-stones and pairs of sashed windows flanking the junction on both floors, with six-pane windows at ground floor and four-pane windows above. There is also a small round-headed one-light window with hollow spandrels at ground floor to the left, and a small shouldered window above that was inserted around 1959.

Inside, the west bay has a large cambered lateral beam approximately 2.5 metres from the end wall, while the centre bay contains two axial beams. The roof trusses have exposed tie-beams at the first floor of the centre and west bays, with the former featuring re-used cruck blades as principals. The farmhouse forms a group with the stable range to the west.
