Description

Blands Farmhouse is a small farmhouse, likely built in the late 17th century and enlarged in the 18th century, with some alterations. The structure features mixed random rubble on the right side and thin coursed rubble on the left, complemented by large quoins and a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth, two-unit plan consisting of two builds, with a small outshut added to the rear.

The exterior comprises two low storeys and two windows. There is a stone slate drip-course over the ground floor of the right side, and a quoined vertical joint in the centre of the first floor, which separates the two halves. To the left of this junction, there is a square-headed doorway with remnants of a former small gabled porch. To the left of the doorway, there is a square 12-pane fixed window with one opening pane, and to the right, an oblong 6-pane fixed window and a former two-light mullioned window with a chamfered surround. On the first floor, each half features a rectangular 9-pane fixed window with one opening pane, with the right side window being larger. The right gable has a large square corbelled chimney, while the left gable has a later lateral chimney. The left gable wall includes a small square window near the rear corner of the first floor. At the rear, there is a very small square fire-window near the east corner, a low pantry window in the rear wall of the outshut, and a doorway in the west wall.

Inside, there is a very thick lateral partition wall to the right of the entrance, which contains the original main doorway to the house, suggesting that there may have been a former through-passage between the byre and the house. The house part to the right has a stone flagged floor, two chamfered axial beams, and exposed joists. The staircase is mounted along the back wall of this room. The farmhouse retains rare main features of a very small dwelling, which was likely originally a one-unit house, and has seen little alteration in the 20th century.
