Description
This is a cottage, originally part of a larger farmhouse or homestead, dating from the early and late 17th century. It was remodelled in the late 18th century and has undergone minor alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage is constructed of coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof, featuring irregular quoins. It is two storeys high.
The front facing Brook Street has two doorways positioned off-centre, and a single window covered by a late 20th-century lean-to conservatory to the left. Another single window is visible, with two further windows above. These upper windows are uPVC casements set within flush ashlar surrounds. The right return has a single former two-light chamfered mullion window on each floor.
The rear facade retains a 20th-century uPVC casement and a blocked mullion window on the ground floor. Above is a single former two-light chamfered mullion window with a glazing bar sash.
Inside, a ground floor room on the right has chamfered spine beams supported by stone corbels with patterned plaster decoration. A former fireplace hood features a moulded stone surround and a plaster overmantle with matching decorative patterning. Both this room and the room to the left contain sections of late 17th-century plaster coving exhibiting similar decoration. A section of decorative plasterwork is also present in the upper floor bathroom.
