Description
South View is a cottage and house, dated 1653, and originally built for John Butterfield. It is constructed of roughcast rubble with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. A boulder plinth runs along the base. A doorway has been inserted between the first and second bays to provide access to the cottage. A board door, set within an ashlar surround with a stop-chamfered quoined surround and a depressed-arch head, is located between the second and third bays. The lintel of this door features recessed panels bearing the inscription "1653 IB". The ground-floor window in the first bay is a four-light double-chamfered mullion window with ogee moulding on the mullions. The first-floor window above it is a three-light double-chamfered mullion window, similarly ornamented. Side-sliding sash windows with slab lintels and sills are found in the second and third bays. Chimneys are located at both ends of the building and to the left of the second bay. A lean-to addition to the right is not considered to be of special interest. The rear elevation features rubble stonework with large quoins to the left, a central semicircular stair turret with three blocked light vents, and chamfered beams internally. Inside the stair turret is a stone newel stair. A ground-floor room in the centre contains an ashlar fireplace with double-cyma corbels supporting the lintel. A ground-floor room to the left has a slightly-arched ashlar fireplace with a deep chamfer, and a cupboard with L hinges is located to its left.
