Description
A cottage dated 1682, with alterations from the 18th century and 20th century. The cottage is built of squared rubble with stone dressings and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and originally comprised four bays. The entrance is located to the left of centre and features a moulded surround and a decorated lintel dated and inscribed with HMB, referring to Henry and Mary Brown. A plank door is set within this surround. On the ground floor, the left-hand side has a former two-light chamfered window from which the mullion is now missing, with a hoodmould above. Centrally, there is a two-light chamfered mullioned window with a 17th-century surround, which was later heightened, and a mullion added in approximately 1980. The right-hand side has a late 18th-century three-light flat-faced mullioned window. The upper floor has two three-light chamfered mullioned windows, a single-light chamfered window in the centre, and a three-light ovolo mullioned window to the right. All windows now have 20th-century fixed lights or casements. A ridge stack is situated to the right of centre. Internally, the front room to the left contains a 17th-century fireplace with a basket arched lintel. The central room has an early 18th-century fireplace with a moulded surround and a mantlepiece supported by consoles.
