Description

The Old Hall is a house, with a porch dated 1695 and a main block constructed in the 18th century, altered in the 19th century. It is built of rendered stone with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. The house was likely originally planned with a lobby-entry layout.

The house has two storeys and three bays. A projecting gabled porch is located to the left of centre. The entrance is surrounded by chamfered stonework, with a decorated lintel dated and inscribed "C/T E" for Thomas and Elizabeth Clapham. An upper floor window has an 18th-century moulded surround and sash windows. A shield and an early 19th-century lancet window are set into the gable, with bargeboards. A window dating from around 1800 is located on the left-hand side, featuring two lights with flat-faced mullions and sash windows. A mid-18th century window is located on the right-hand side per storey, supported by a moulded surround and sash windows. Gable end and left of centre ridge stacks are present. The right-hand gable end contains three 19th-century windows per storey, with plain surrounds and sash windows. A round window or “bullseye” is set into the gable. The main block contains 18th-century roof trusses of queen post type, with king posts supported by collars. The decorated lintel to the porch is similar to the one at Lumb Farm, Rathmell, dated 1702.
