Description

Langcliffe High Mill is a former cotton mill, now used as a paper mill, built between 1784 and 1786 for George and William Clayton and R Walshman. The mill features watershot masonry with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The north front has been extended to the left. The right-hand block, dating from around 1784, is six storeys tall and has nine bays, with the fourth and seventh bays projecting slightly. There is a round-headed entrance from the mill leat on the left side, which is now blocked. The windows have plain surrounds and projecting sills, with 20th-century casements. The right-hand gable includes coping and a kneeler, while a similar coping and kneeler can be found at the former left-hand gable, which now connects to the left-hand extension. This left-hand extension, built around 1786, is five storeys high and has 14 bays, with the central six bays breaking forward slightly. The windows in this section are similar but smaller than those in the right-hand block. Due to the higher ground on the left, the roofs of both blocks are at the same height.
