Description
Fernlea is a late 18th-century cottage, house, and stable combined under one roof, located on the north-west side of Thoralby Village Street. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high. The front features a symmetrical arrangement of openings, with one cottage on the left that has quoins and a board door with a deep lintel. To the right of the door, there is a two-light casement window, and to its left, two blocked single-light windows at different levels. The first floor has a window opening, but the cottage was derelict and roofless at the time of the last survey, revealing trenched rafter roof trusses.
In the center is the house, which also has quoins and features a central board door flanked by two-light casement windows with slab lintels. The stable is located on the right and is partly integrated into the house. On the ground floor, it has a 20th-century three-light window where former external steps were, as well as a blocked segmental-arched cart-shed opening. The first floor includes a board door and a two-light window. There are stacks at both ends of the house, with the one on the right made of brick.
Inside the house, the left parlour fireplace has an ashlar surround with pilaster capitals, while the right kitchen fireplace, dating from the 18th century, features an ashlar design with cyma reversa corbels supporting the lintel. The interior also includes stop-chamfered beams.
