Description
There are two stone effigies of knights located approximately 7 metres east of Coverham Abbey House. These effigies date from the late 13th century and early 14th century and are set upright against the north side of a garden wall. The left-hand effigy, from the early 14th century, features a figure in an S-shaped form, dressed in chain mail and a surcoat, holding a sword and shield. His legs are crossed, and behind them is a scene depicting a stag being chased by two hounds, with a third hound biting his shield. Above his head is a cusped and crocketed canopy. The right-hand effigy, dating from the late 13th century, also depicts a figure in chain mail and a surcoat, holding a long sword and shield, with his hands folded in prayer and legs crossed.
