Description
Havenhurst is a Calvinist chapel and school, now a house, dated 1827. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and has 2½ storeys with two first-floor windows. The building features quoins. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century canted bay window to the left and a 20th-century four-light casement window to the right. The first floor has three-light casements. Centrally above these windows is a panel inscribed "THIS CALVINIST CHAPEL and SCHOOL ROOM were ENDOWED and ERECTED By JOHN TOMLINSON of this place AD 1827," which is adorned with a long stepped hood-mould. The building has ashlar copings and end stacks. The rear elevation includes modern casement windows and the heads of two round-headed windows with imposts and keystones above. There is an end entry on the right return. The schoolroom was located on the ground floor, with the chapel above, and the minister also served as the schoolmaster. This is one of the few Calvinist chapels still surviving in England.
