Description

The Church of St Gregory, also known as the Vale of Lune Chapel, is a chapel located at the Ingmire Hall Estate in Sedbergh. It was built in 1850 as a Mission Chapel and was altered and enlarged in 1907. The structure features mixed random rubble with red sandstone quoins and a graduated slate roof topped with a wooden and glazed lantern. The gabled front was rebuilt, and a porch was added, constructed of snecked rubble with yellow sandstone dressings and quoins.

The chapel has a small nave oriented on a north-south axis, with a north porch and a south chancel that is designed as a crosswing, functioning as a single vessel with short transepts. The porch, dating from 1907, includes a small rectangular window at the front, a memorial plaque commemorating Florence Ann Upton Cottrell Dormer, who died in 1907, above it, and a coped gable parapet with kneelers. There is also a doorway on the west side of the porch featuring a gablet that displays the Ingmire Hall cross.

The main gable of the chapel has an ashlar bellcote, flanked by coped gable parapets with kneelers. The west side wall contains three rectangular one-light windows with raised plain surrounds. The gable of the south wing features a central gabled extension, with similar windows on either side and another above. The roof includes a long low lantern with five segmental-headed lights and oversailing bracketed eaves leading to a swept hipped roof. The east side, which abuts an adjoining cottage, has no windows.

Inside, the chapel features a panelled dado, chancel pews with carved ends, and windows adorned with wooden architraves and elaborate stained glass, which predominantly exhibits Art Nouveau influences.
