Description
The Lune Viaduct at Newbys Dub is a railway viaduct that carries the former Tebay-Kirkby Lonsdale line over the River Lune. It was constructed between 1857 and 1861 by Joseph Locke and John Errington for the Ingleton branch of the London and North Western Railway Company. The viaduct is built from punch-dressed red sandstone and cast iron, showcasing a classical style. It features a symmetrical design with a central cast iron span flanked by three-bay arcades of round-headed stone arches on each side. The central span has a plain segmental arch with spandrels that include two tiers of round-headed arches. This span is supported by a pair of large square piers that are slightly battered, adorned with modillioned cornices and parapets that have low triangular upstands. The flanking arcades begin from rectangular piers that have prominent impost bands, a plain ashlar frieze, a moulded cornice, and punch-dressed parapets, which lead to abutment piers styled similarly to those at the center.
