Description

Garth’s Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse, with extensions and alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of mixed random rubble, with a painted white facade and a graduated stone slate roof, incorporating some blue slates on the rear slope. The building has a rectangular, single-depth two-unit plan, with a one-unit addition at the south end.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a 1:3 window arrangement. A low, gabled porch is offset to the left of centre, featuring a square-headed outer opening, stone side benches, and a 19th-century panelled inner door. There is a three-light casement window to the left of the porch, a two-light casement window to the right, and three square two-light casement windows at the first floor; all ground floor windows have large rectangular lintels and four panes to each light. A ridge chimney is located on the former left gable, now at the junction with the addition. The addition to the left has a doorway on the left and one casement window on each floor, the upper window being offset to the left. The rear elevation has a nine-pane fixed window in the centre of the ground floor, a stair window offset to the left, and two widely separated windows at the first floor, which were likely inserted later; there’s a visible vertical joint indicating the addition.

The interior features scored muntin-and-rail panelled partitioning at the first floor, both axial and lateral. The farmhouse forms a group with the barn to the east.
