Description
This is a barn, originally part of Mains Farm, dating from an earlier period than the porch which is dated 1714. The barn is constructed of rubble stone with quoins, and has a graduated slate roof with stone copings, kneelers, and stone end chimneys. It is two storeys high and comprises three bays. A central, two-storey gabled porch is a later addition, featuring a planked door with chamfered jambs and an initialled and dated lintel. Garage doors have been inserted to the left of the porch, and a single sash window is located to the right. The first floor includes a small window to the porch and single sashes on either side. The original sashes were 16-paned, although some now lack glass and glazing bars, and all are set within timber lintels. A lean-to has been built against the west wall, featuring a graduated slate roof and a small window opening. A semicircular stair projection at the rear of the building has a partially blocked window opening. An blocked window surround with a semicircular head is visible on the east end of the rear wall. Re-used mullioned window heads and sills are incorporated into the exterior. Inside, a downstairs fireplace has a bracketed stone mantelpiece, and an upstairs fireplace features a moulded surround. In 1983, the building was structurally sound but in need of repair.
