Description
The Queen Victoria Memorial Cross, located in Queen's Garden, is a tall Anglo-Celtic cross made of sandstone and stands 5 meters high. It features a slightly tapering rectangular shaft set on a shaped plinth that bears the name "H T MILES, ULVERSTON." The cross head is adorned with bosses that have crosshatch decoration, and all sides display interlace decoration. The front and rear of the cross are elaborately carved with interlace and strap work, featuring a central panel of foliate decoration.
On the north face, there is an inscription that reads: "VICTORIA, QUEEN, EMPRESS/ 1837-1901/ REVERED, BELOVED, REMEMBERED." The south face contains another inscription that states: "THESE GROUNDS/ WERE LAID OUT AND/ PRESENTED TO THE/ TOWN OF SEDBERGH/ AS A LASTING MEMORIAL OF THE/ GLORIOUS REIGN OF/ QUEEN VICTORIA/ BY HER FAITHFUL/ SUBJECT/ FLORENCE ANNE/ UPTON-COTTRELL-DORMER."
