Description

The Old Grammar School, now functioning as a junior school, was built in 1601 with 19th-century alterations. It features ashlar stonework and a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of six bays. It has a plinth and an off-centre full-height gabled porch. The porch includes a moulded doorway with a four-centred arch under a square head, adorned with foliated spandrels. Above the doorway is a continuous dripmould and a panel that reads, "William Craven Alderman of London founder of this Schoole Anno Dmi 1601." This panel is flanked by engaged columns that support a cornice. Inside the porch, there is a studded board door with a four-centred arch. To the right of the left-hand bay, there is a four-panel door in a chamfered surround, also featuring a four-centred arch. All windows have ogee mullions and leaded lights; those on the ground floor have a continuous dripmould, while the window above the porch on the first floor also has a continuous dripmould. The left-hand bay has a three-light window, as does the window above the porch, while the bay to the left of the porch has a two-light window. The remaining windows are four-light. The building is topped with ball finials and has chamfered stone coping. A bellcote is located on the right-hand gable, and there is a ridge stack with two diagonally set shafts.
