Description
Gunnerside New Bridge is a bridge built in the early 1830s. It is constructed from rubble and features two arches: a semi-circular arch to the south and a segmental arch to the north, both with voussoirs and a central cutwater. There is a crude string below the parapet with rock-faced coping. The bridge was built by Edward Broderick of Spring End to help alleviate unemployment caused by a depression in the lead-mining industry, with work reported to be in progress in 1835. The bridge has been rebuilt multiple times after being washed away by floods during the 19th century.
