Description
The Methodist Chapel, a Wesleyan Methodist building, was constructed in 1866. It is made of coursed watershot rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The chapel is two storeys high and has three bays on the front and sides. The openings are framed with projecting ashlar surrounds that have roll moulding along the edges. There is an ashlar plinth with a benchmark and rusticated quoins. The central doorway features a round-headed arch with imposts, voussoirs, a keystone, and double board doors. The windows also have round-headed arches with imposts and keystones, and the lower windows are 8-pane sashes. On the first floor, there is a sill band and a pair of windows above the door. This band creates a pediment on the gable, which has a plaque in the tympanum inscribed with 'WESLEYAN METHODIST CHAPEL ERECTED 1866', and above it, a circular opening with a timber ventilation grille. The gable apex is adorned with ashlar copings, a spiked ball, and an obelisk finial on a pedestal. The side elevations feature sash windows with glazing bars in quoined surrounds on the ground floor, and 8-pane sashes in round-headed surrounds on the first floor. Inside, there is a gallery supported by cast-iron columns and some original furnishings. This chapel replaced a previous structure from 1789 that stood on the same site, and there are some tombstones in the graveyard that are older than the current building.
