Description
The wash house located west of the rear wing of Hipping Hall is an outbuilding, likely used as a wash house and privy, and probably dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone and features a slate monopitch roof. The building is single storey.
The front (east) wall has two doorways; the left-hand doorway has a plain stone surround, while the right-hand doorway has rubble jambs and a pointed arch. Between these doorways is a small window with a plain stone surround. Inside, the right-hand compartment is smaller and contains a low stone bench against the right-hand wall, above which are three small blocked square openings with stone surrounds. The larger compartment is open at the rear, and three stone steps lead down to a flagged floor that is on two levels. Additional stone steps provide access to the stream that runs along the rear wall of the building.
