Description

The Church of St Peter is a church built between 1878 and 1879 by the architectural firm Paley & Austin, which was rebuilt by Austin & Paley in 1915 following a fire. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The church includes a west tower with a spire, a nave that has a north aisle and a south porch, a lower chancel, and a vestry.

The tower consists of two stages with battered walls, a plinth, two string courses, and an octagonal slated spire set back behind a solid parapet. Each of the bell openings contains one cinquefoiled light. The west window has three lights beneath a pointed head with Perpendicular tracery. The south wall of the nave has two bays and features windows with four elliptically-headed lights under a flat head. A buttress on the right separates the nave from the chancel, which has windows with three and one trefoiled lights. The south porch is made of timber and has a doorhead that is carved with a depressed ogee. The inner stone doorway is moulded and has a pointed arch. The east window has a segmental head with a hood and consists of eight trefoiled lights.

Inside, the church has a five-bay arcade with pointed arches that are chamfered in two orders, supported by round piers with moulded caps. There is an additional arch on the north side of the chancel that leads to an organ chamber. Both the tower arch and chancel arch are pointed. The open timber roof features trusses with arch-braced king posts that rise from collars, along with common rafters, collars, and straight braces. The font is octagonal, made of sandstone, and has carved decoration.
