Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a parish church built in 1851 by the architects Mallinson and Healey from Bradford. It is constructed from coursed rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The church features a nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry, and a boiler house, all designed in the Early English style.
The nave has three bays, which include one single-light window and two 2-light trefoil-headed windows, along with stepped buttresses. At the west gable end, there is an octagonal bell turret topped with a pyramidal hood, and at the east gable end, there is a cruciform finial. The chancel is narrower and lower than the nave and consists of two bays. The south entrance features a chamfered surround, a decorated lintel, and a plank door. To the left of the entrance is a 2-light trefoil-headed window with a cinquefoil above it, and to the right is a single-light trefoil-headed window. The east end has angle buttresses and a 3-light trefoil-headed window with two trefoils and one quatrefoil above it, along with a cruciform finial at the east gable end.
The south entrance porch includes a pointed arch with hoodmoulds and decorated stops, a plank door, and a gable end cruciform finial. On the north wall, there is a lean-to vestry at the west end of the nave and a lean-to boiler house adjacent to the chancel.
