Description

Flax Mill Farm is a water-powered textile mill, dating to circa 1785, now used as a house and outbuilding. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof. It is three storeys high with five first-floor openings, and includes a two-storey rear wing. Quoins are visible, with a straight joint located between bays three and four. Doorways are situated in bays three and four, and on the first floor in bay one. The house at the right end features four-pane sash windows. A stack is positioned between bays three and four, and a large paired stack forms a bellcote at the right gable. Originally built as a cotton mill, it was later converted to a flax mill. Historical context can be found in Hartley M and Ingilby J’s Yorkshire Village (1979), pages 131-135.
