Description
This is a bank barn located approximately 30 meters south of Fell Yeat Farmhouse at Side, likely built in the early 18th century. The barn is constructed of mixed random rubble with large irregular quoins and features a stone slate roof, although the north slope has been replaced with corrugated asbestos sheet. It has a rectangular four-bay plan that runs at right angles to the slope, with a shippon located under the north-west end.
The exterior consists of two unequal storeys. On the south-west side, there is a wagon doorway in the third bay, which is accessed by an L-shaped stone and earth ramp. This doorway has a lintel made from re-used cruck blades and is protected by a prominent stone-slate drip-course, along with 19th-century hung doors. To the left, a stone-slate drip-course extends over the shippon storey, which features a blocked two-light mullioned window and a doorway to the right that has been altered into a window. The wall above contains a few random through-stones. The north-west gable end has a square-headed doorway leading to the shippon, a stone-slate band, and two courses of through-stones that alternate with two levels of small square breathers. The north-east side has through-stones on three levels, with small square breathers on the upper two levels, and a blocked wagon doorway in the third bay that has a lintel and drip-band similar to the south-west doorway.
Inside, the barn features three collar trusses, two of which have raked struts, and two of the principal beams are made from re-used cruck blades. The original purlins remain on the south slope. This barn forms a group with Fell Yeat Farmhouse.
